IP Rating Explained

As we all know, water and electrics are not a great combination, which is why lighting in the bathroom needs to be somewhat IP protected, preferably at least IP44.

The ‘IP’ stands for Ingress Protection, with the numbers following being an indicator for how guarded the fitting will be against both water and foreign objects.

The first digit shows how shielded it will be against particles like dust for example. The second digit then shows how protected it will be against water, with the level of protection getting higher as the number grows higher.

The above product is IP44 Rated, which essentially means that it is protected against small foreign objects, and splashes of water. This makes it suitable for use in the bathroom, just not in zone 0 which is inside the bath or shower itself.
