Cutting LED Strip Lights - Some Frequently Asked Questions
Posted by Richard Clarke on 20th Aug 2013
LED strip lights are such versatile products. They’re an excellent solution to your mood lighting needs, whilst providing incredible flexibility.
As you might expect then, we get asked a lot of questions – a lot of them related to cutting.
That’s why we’ve prepared this guide that will tell you everything you need to know about cutting your LED tape.
1. Can Your LED Strip Lights Be Cut?
Yes. All of our LED tapes can be cut.
2. What Lengths Can Your LED Strip Lights Be Cut To?
This depends on the type of LED tape you have. The cutting intervals are as follows:
- 30 LEDs per metre can be cut every 10cm,
- 60 LEDs per metre can be cut every 5cm, and
- 120 LEDs per metre can be cut every 2.5cm.
Different types may differ slightly from this though, for example our AON RGBW tape has 60 LEDs per metre but can only be cut every 10cm due to the arrangement of the LEDs.
These cutting lengths are also doubled for 24V tape too.
3. How Easy Is It To Cut An LED Strip Light?
Simply put – very easy. It just involves using a normal pair of scissors, and cutting across the designated cut point. Honestly, it’s that easy. You just need to be careful not to cut outside of these cutting points.
4. What Do The Cutting Points Look Like?
Cutting points are marked by a thin line, with a set of metallic solder points either side. There’s also a small picture of a pair of scissors along the lines too.
As detailed earlier, cutting points are at even intervals along the length of the strip. In most cases, they will be located every 3 LEDs.
5. Can I Cut The LED Strip Light Anywhere Else?
You can, but we wouldn’t recommend it. By cutting an LED strip light anywhere other than the designated cutting point, you run the risk of damaging the components on the strip itself, as well as the circuit board. This may ultimately result in the strip light not working.
6. Can You Cut My LED Strip Lights For Me?
If you don’t feel confident cutting your own LED tape, we can do it for you. We offer up to 5 cuts for free, all you need to do is send us your measurements, or give us a call to discuss them.
7. How Do I Reconnect My LED Strip Lights After They’ve Been Cut?
You can solder separate pieces of LED tape together. We are aware though that not everyone knows how to solder, or has a soldering iron handy.
That’s why we offer a range of solderless connectors for our strip lights, like our Aon Solder Free "Strip To Strip" Connectors (10 Pack). These can be used to connect two lengths of strip directly to one another, end on end.
The corner connectors we sell allow you to create a right-angle out of two pieces of LED tape.
8. Do You Accept Returns On Made-To-Measure Items?
Unfortunately we can’t accept returns on made-to-measure items. The simple reason is that if we have cut your LED strip lights cut to a specific length, it is nearly impossible for us to resell that item (unless there is the off chance that someone else is looking for a piece of tape of exactly the same length!).
