Choose The Right LED Panel Light For Your Application
Posted by Richard Clarke on 3rd Sep 2015
LED Panel Lights are a type of lighting fixture, designed specifically as a replacement for traditional fluorescent ceiling lights, and they represent one of the very best lighting options for indoor applications.
Whilst LED lighting technology itself has been widely used for quite some time now, however, LED panel lights themselves are a somewhat more recent development; rapidly gaining popularity due to their versatility, cost-effectiveness and innovative design features.
There are a variety of different types on offer, giving you a more than ample number of choices to suit your requirements.
Here’s a run-down, together with some ideas regarding their potential applications.
Surface Panel Lights
Surface Panel Lights, often referred to as “Surface-Mounted” are the type to use if you don’t have a suspended ceiling and recessing isn’t an option.
Incredibly convenient and simple to install, surface-mounted LED panel lights come complete with all the fittings and brackets you’ll require to affix them to any flat surface, whether it be a ceiling or a wall. Also part of the package is the appropriate plug-and-play power supply/transformer that will enable you to connect your light directly to the mains.
They’re available in a choice of wattages, including 6W, 12W, 18W and 24W, and in either a circular or a square format to suit your décor, taste and space.
Both types of surface-mounted panel light will afford you three options, the first of which is the colour temperature of the light they emit.
The first is the warm white (3000K), which is very similar to that of the traditional halogen, and by far the more convivial of the choices. There’s also a cool white (6000K) option, which is best suited to functional, work-related spaces as it’s a lot brighter and more penetrative.
The third option is called “Triple White Cycle” and it effectively switches between cool white, warm white and daylight (4000K), each time you switch it back on, giving you the best of all worlds.
They also emit a good quality of light that ranks quite highly on the CRI (Colour Rendering Index), meaning that it’s quite a close approximation of natural daylight and thus an excellent choice if you require illumination for close work.
As with all LED lights, these surface-mounted LED panel lights are super energy-efficient and will save you a considerable amount on your electricity bill when they’re used to replace your conventional fluorescent lights. That’s because they require only a fraction of the energy to produce the same number of lumens as their predecessors.
Recessed Panel Lights
Great for simply slotting into your suspended ceiling to replace your modular fluorescent lights, Recessed LED Panel Lights, like the aforementioned surface-mounted type, provide a very wide 120° beam angle which gives an excellent spread of light.
If you are purchasing them as ceiling light replacements, they’ll retrofit into the space vacated by your old modular fluorescent lights, however, they’ll be equally at home affixed to any flat surface thanks to the various Mounting Kits we have on offer.
There are two sizes of mounting kit to accommodate the 600x600mm and the 1200x600mm LED panel lights, as well as equivalently-sized Suspension Kits.
Endowed with a life-expectancy that’s similarly long to that of all LED lights and bulbs, the recessed ceiling lights can be expected to function at optimum capacity for more than 50,000 hours, which equates to over 17 years, if an 8 hour working day is assumed. This means you’ll spend a great deal less time on their maintenance, not to mention the money you’ll save on replacements.
Blue Edge-Lit Panel Lights
Also for your recessed ceiling, Blue Edge-Lit LED Panel Lights will provide a stunning 21st Century look to whichever space you require to be illuminated.
Similarly convenient, they’re supplied with their own, dedicated transformer, although you will need to cut a suitably-sized hole in your ceiling to install them.
They’re to be had in a variety of wattages, ranging from 6W to 20W and, similar to the surface-mounted panels, in circular and square shapes, they’re also immune from splashing water thanks to their IP44 Ingress Protection Rating.
Whichever of our LED panel lights you choose, you’ll be sure to get a quality light source that’s guaranteed to be both long-lasting and ultra energy-efficient.
