LED Lights in Your Car - How's Best to Use Them?
Posted by Amit Soni on 14th Oct 2011
LEDs have come a long way in recent years. They’re no longer just standby indicators for your TV, they are the energy-efficient lighting revolution that is helping people save money and electricity. They are the versatile lighting solution found in strip lighting, panel lights, and even in your car.
How to Use LEDs in Your Car
The most obvious way to incorporate LEDs into your car is in your headlights. LEDs are a much better solution for your headlights, as the lights are much brighter. This is despite using much less energy than the older incandescent bulbs. Because LEDs can last for around 50,000 hours of usage, it’s likely that your headlights will survive the entire lifespan of your car and more.
Many modern cars now come fully equipped with LED headlights, with some models having intelligent LED arrays that can adjust as the car drives, lighting up corners as you go around them, or automatically dipping to avoid dazzling other drivers.
Interior Lighting
It’s not just the headlights that can benefit from LED additions. You could use LED strip lighting in your vehicle, to replace the default courtesy and reading lights that may come in your car. This means you could improve the light in the boot with a brighter one that properly illuminates the contents. To that end, an LED strip light would be super-helpful in your glove compartment, too.
LED strip lighting is extremely flexible, so could be perfect for your car. It comes in a range of different brightness levels, so you could have different lights for guidance and for illumination. For example, you could have a less bright strip light around the footwell, for aesthetic purposes. It would also help when you get in and out of the car at night.
Different Colours
Another advantage of LED lighting is the difference in colours and colour temperatures. If the bright white in your car is not to your taste, try a warmer white or even an RGB light, to see what works for you.
Most LED lights are fully capable with 12V systems, which means you are free to use your imagination with in-vehicle lighting. Remember, LED lighting is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, as long as you choose the right type. Any exterior lighting will need to be weatherproof, to protect it from the rain.
