Combat Spiralling Energy Prices - Use Ultra-Efficient LED Lighting

Posted by Richard Clarke on 19th Sep 2011

Cooker StoveThe news that EDF Energy has decided to increase its energy prices, will no doubt have come as an unwelcome surprise to utility bill payers the length and breadth of the country.

The Problem

EDF Energy has become the last of the ‘big six’ energy firms to raise its prices, and the hikes were quite substantial, with electricity rising by 4.5% and gas shooting up by an enormous 15.4%.

This means that the average dual energy bill is set to increase to almost £1,300 a year, threatening to push millions of householders closer to fuel poverty than ever before.

The increases are due to take effect on the 10th of November, bringing EDF’s prices into line with the likes of Scottish Power, Scottish & Energy (SSE), British Gas, E.ON, and Npower, all of which have implemented price hikes over the last 12 months.

In response to the energy company’s announcement, Consumer Focus, the impartial body giving advice to energy customers, has stated that “Millions of people will be cutting back on other essentials if they want to keep warm.”

EDF Energy’s energy price increase will affect approximately 3.2million of its 5.1million customers. Ironically, despite holding out on the price increases longer than any other, EDF Energy is one of the least liked of the ‘big six’ energy companies, being named  Britain’s most complained about supplier earlier this month.

USwitch, a consumer comparison site, has expressed the fear that "We are in danger of seeing energy becoming an unaffordable luxury for the few instead of a household basic for the many." Its fears are supported by the fact that last winter alone, over 14 million households went without heating at some point in order to save on energy costs.

One Possible Solution

Whilst it’s definitely no cure-all, it’s certainly no placebo either, because cost-effective, energy-saving LED lighting is 100% guaranteed to save you money on your household energy bills.

There is no question that LEDs, when used to replace your current wasteful incandescent, and even your “energy-saving” CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps), will require just a fraction of the electricity to provide the exact same number of lumens of brightness.

Here’s a prime example of just how much money you can save simply by replacing 10 bulbs in your home this winter:

  • A bestselling GU10 LED replacement bulb such as the GU10 LED Bulb 80 SMD;
  • Requires 3.3 watts of electricity;
  • Produces the same 400 lumens of brightness as a 50 watt traditional light bulb;
  • Replacing x10 traditional light bulbs and assuming an energy cost of £13.75 pence per kWh;
  • Both sets of bulbs run for 8 hours a day for 365 days;
  • The 10 x 50 watt traditional bulbs use 1460.00 kWh - cost £200.75;
  • The 10 x 3.3 watt GU10 LED bulbs use 96.36 kWh – cost £13.25;
  • Saving gained = £187.50.

This LED bulb was picked at random from the wide range of LED light bulbs, all of which will save you a similar amount of money when you use them to replace your existing, inefficient bulbs.

There’s a type of LED light bulb suitable for every light fitting in your home, so why not begin making savings today, and beat those soaring energy blues this winter?
