Illuminating the bathroom is a difficult job. As a room we don’t spend all day in, the lighting needs to be just right to match every time of day and every demand. Not to mention, water and electrics together are not a great combination if it hasn’t been thought out properly.

We all know the main advantages of LED lighting like its long lifespan, energy efficiency and high durability which makes them perfect for every room without thinking too much about it.

When planning the lighting for your bathroom, there are a number of factors to take into consideration, including:

• IP Ratings
• Bathroom Zoning
• The Type of Lighting

IP Ratings Explained

IP is short for ‘Ingress Protection’ and is used to denote the protection a fitting has to both foreign objects and water.

At a minimum, we suggest that your bathroom lights be IP44 for full protection at all times as they are considered as ‘splash proof’.

If you are opting for multiple LEDs in your restroom, you will need to consider different IP ratings for each zone.

What Are Bathroom Zones?

So, now you’re clued up on IP ratings – let’s talk about bathroom zoning. These are specific sections set out in the electrical safety regulations and will point out higher risk areas. Splitting up regions of the bathroom, the zones are categorised as 0, 1, 2 or 3.

Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower itself. If lighting is necessary, it must be low voltage and rate a 7 in its IP against water.

Zone 1 is above the bath or shower and 2.25m from the floor. The fitting must be protected against splashes of water from any direction.

Zone 2 is an area reaching 0.6m outside the perimeter of Zone 1 and 2.25m above the ground. By rule of thumb, the area around a wash basin is classed as Zone 2.

Zone 3 is simply any areas outside Zones 0, 1 and 2 or where no water is likely to be used or reach.

Here are a few tricks we would use when installing and styling LEDs in your restroom:

• Always opt for a Daylight (4000K) or Cool White (6000K) to have stronger task lighting
• Stick to shorter length fittings, like spotlights and flush ceiling lights, to avoid incidents
• Ensure your LED Strip Lights are waterproof before installing them
