Turn Back The Clocks And Energy Prices With LED Lighting
Posted by Richard Clarke on 28th Oct 2011
Some people love it and some people hate it, but every year without fail, we turn back out clocks on the last Sunday of October. While we gain an hour of morning sunlight during the summer months, we lose the same amount of light from our long winter evenings.
Whether or not you’re fond of the custom, one thing that’s for sure is that, for many, it heralds the beginning of winter and increased levels of spending on household energy bills.
This, of course, is mainly due to the fact that we’re turning on our lights an hour earlier than usual so, unless you’ve got the right kind of light bulbs installed, you’re going to be spending a lot more money than you need to.
With LED lighting technology developing and improving so rapidly, more and more people are beginning to replace their existing light sources with this energy-saving option.
Previously, LED light bulbs were prohibitively expensive, but the massively increased demand for them has driven down the price, so now they’re not only desirable, they’re essential.
They’re incredibly energy-efficient, requiring, on average, 90% less electricity to run than equivalently bright traditional bulbs.
Super For Retrofitting
A prime example of the way in which you can simply replace one of your existing incandescent light bulbs with one of our energy-saving LEDs is the Dimmable B22 6W Omni-LED Clear Globe Bulb.
First and foremost, this LED bulb looks very similar to the bulb it’s replacing. It’s not only the same shape as an old-school incandescent, it also has exactly the same fitting or ‘cap’ as one.
This will enable you to simply take out the old bulb and pop the new one in its place, with no need to make any other changes to your current lighting setup.
LED light bulbs are available in a wide variety of fitting options and also in a great many shapes and sizes, so it’s always a good idea to check them against your existing bulbs prior to making your purchase.
Once it’s in place, you’ll begin to experience the benefits of LED lighting for yourself.
Amazing Energy-Savings
It uses just 6 watts of electricity, yet generates the same 650 Lumens as a 60 watt incandescent bulb.
To enable you to envisage the savings you’ll make during the winter months, imagine you’re replacing just one incandescent B22 bulb with the aforementioned, energy-efficient LED version.
For the 147 days from the 30th of October until the 27th of March (when British Summer Time begins), assuming an electricity price of 14.05 pence per kW/h and a use of 8 hours, the costs of each bulb are as follows:
- The 60-watt Incandescent B22 Bulb will require 70.56 kW/h and cost £9.91 to run.
- The 6-watt B22 LED Bulb will require 7.06 kW/h and cost 0.99 pence to run.
Therefore, by replacing just one bulb in your home, you stand to save £8.92; switch 10 and you’d save £89.20 and switch 20 to save an enormous £178.40!
Extra Long-Lasting
As with all our LED bulbs, these B22 LEDs have a life-expectancy that’s many times that of the incandescent bulbs they’re replacing. Indeed, their energy-saving feature is a result of their ability to dissipate the small amount of heat they produce, but another is that they’ll last for 50,000 hours, which means they’ll provide you with low-cost illumination this winter and for many more winters to come.
