Where To Use Daylight LED Lighting
Posted by Emma Reid on 24th May 2022
Everyone knows sunshine is good for you, but for a lot of offices, classrooms and homes, filling a room with natural daylight just isn’t possible. That’s where LED lighting can save the day!
Natural light helps us feel alert, it supports our metabolism and helps us produce vitamin D! This is why our moods tend to take a dip in darker winter months, or when we’re stuck in particularly gloomy offices.
There’re no substitutes for true natural sunlight, but not every room can easily get a big open window to let the sunshine in. If that’s they case in a key room in your home or business, daylight LED bulbs could be the best option!
What Is Colour Temperature?
Colour temperature simply tells us the perceived warmth or coldness of a light source. The vast majority of domestic light sources use a warm white colour temperature, which is around 3000K (kelvin) or less. More modern lighting may use cool white light, which is around 6000K+.
Every source of light has a colour temperature, and sunlight is around 5000K. That means you’ll want to look for bulbs between 4000-5000K to get your lighting to mimic natural daylight.
Integrated LEDs can also provide daylight mimicking light, with our panel lights in particular being a popular choice in offices for this exact reason. The NXTGen 600x600 40W LED Panel Light is a great place to start!
OK, now you’ve found some daylight LEDs that suit your needs, where should you use them? What are they for? What makes them a great choice for your room?
Colour Rendering Index
If you have a home art studio, or other location where it’s important to know the true colour of objects, then daylight bulbs are a particularly great choice. LEDs tend to have higher colour rendering indexes compared to other bulbs, but daylight LEDs improve on this even further, with many reaching as high as 90 on the scale.
This makes them a fantastic choice for spaces where objects need to look at their absolute and most authentic best. They also particularly popular around makeup tables!
Focus And Alertness
Daylight LEDs have a noticeable impact on the feel of a room, and can massively improve your focus. This makes them a great choice for offices (both traditional and home-based), classrooms and libraries. Anywhere you need to knuckle down and get some good work done for hours at a time is the perfect place to pop some daylight LEDs.
Improving Your Mood
Seasonal Affective Disorder (often known as SAD) is a common problem for many people. If you find yourself getting irritable, lethargic or having a persistent low mood during winter months, you could be prone to it yourself.
Having some daylight bulbs ready to go around your home can really help you counteract this low mood.
Where Shouldn’t I Use Daylight Bulbs?
With all these amazing perks, why shouldn’t you use these bulbs everywhere?
It’s a matter of ambience. Extra alertness is nice, but you don’t want that feeling in every single room!
If you have a room where it’s more important that you’re able to relax and unwind, the cosier yellow tinge of warm white lighting is a much better choice. Bedrooms and living rooms in particular really shine when paired with warm white light
If you want to push things even further, creating a more modern and clinical appearance, then the blue tones of a cool white light (6000K) could be a better fit.
