Understanding LEDs
LED technology is often surrounded by technical jargon, which can make it seem complicated. To help demystify it, we’ve broken down some of the most common terms so you can better understand what makes LED lighting so special.
LED – Light Emitting Diode
Simply put, an LED is a semiconductor that emits light when a voltage is applied. This is the reason LED bulbs illuminate instantly when switched on, making them energy-efficient and long-lasting alternatives to traditional lighting.
CCT – Correlated Colour Temperature
CCT refers to the warmth or coolness of the light emitted by a bulb, measured on the Kelvin scale. A lower Kelvin rating, around 3000K, produces a warm, cosy glow, while a higher rating, such as 6000K, gives off a cool, crisp light similar to daylight. Choosing the right CCT can dramatically influence the mood and atmosphere of your space.
CRI – Colour Rendering Index
CRI measures how accurately a light source displays colours compared to natural daylight. LEDs typically have a high CRI, meaning they render colours more vividly and naturally, helping your interiors look their best under artificial light.
