Not to be confused with ambient temperature, colour temperature is the perceived colour that a light source emits.
Equally to how lumens (lm) denote how bright a fitting is, colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) and tells us the shade a white light will be. High Kelvin levels above 5000K are considered ‘Cool’ and low levels from 4000K under are called ‘Warm’.
Cool White bulbs, typically 6000K, are an icier and sharper shade of white. The same blue under-toned as snow will emanate from these bulbs and this temperature is used for commercial spaces mainly. The higher intensity of the white will increase concentration and productivity.
Warm White, traditionally 3000K, is a much more of a typical living room colour. With a classic yellow undertone, it is much softer and preferred for relaxed environments – like homes. It works to enhance the overall appearance of the space and is not usually used for functionality.
