Revolights Are A Revolution In Bike Lighting
Posted by Amit Soni on 16th Apr 2013
Revolights are a brand new design concept in bike lighting that incorporates LED lights onto the front and rear wheels of the bike!
As you can see from the image above, the result is fairly eye-catching – we guess this is kind of the point. The main premise behind the LED lights is safety – as any biking enthusiast will know, visibility is synonymous with safety.
The design is both simple yet so effective. Installing requires you to snap the 4 ball and socket brackets onto your wheel spokes, with the USB rechargeable lithium ion batteries mounted directly to the rings.
All you need to do then is just align the mounting brackets and screw the revolights into place – and you’re ready to go!
The batteries last around 4 hours on a single charge.
This is when they really start to shine though – both literally and figuratively.
Built into the lights is a fork mounted magnet and accelerometer that detect how fast you’re travelling, and ensure that the LEDs are illuminated in such a way that they form 2 arcs at the front and rear of the bike – as shown in the picture above.
The lights create a 360o field of illumination, and shine in such a way that they are visible beyond the tyre too. The effect is that of headlights akin to what you would see on a car. It’s taken a step further too, as the motion sensors detect when you’re slowing, and create a brake light for you too!
All this tech is sure to make many people quite envious – so it’s a good job that the revolights are theft proof, as well as weather proof, so they can survive even the worst that nature has to offer!
The idea for the lights was first conceived in 2010 by Kent Frankovich and Adam Pettler – an entrepreneurial duo from the San Francisco Bay Area. After receiving help with funding from a Kickstarter campaign, the team released their original Revolight system in 2011.
In this system, the LEDs fit onto the existing wheels. The feedback received on the design meant that Frankovich and Pettler then brought out version 2.0 – where the bike wheels have the LED lights directly built into them.

The lights are available now through the official Revolight website. What type of lights do you use on your bike? How do the Revolights sound to you? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
