The 5 Best Things About LED Strip Lights
Posted by Richard Clarke on 25th Apr 2013
Here at Wholesale LED Lights, we think LED strip lights are absolutely brilliant. We’ve been trying to wrack our brains to think of the 5 best things about them. The problem isn’t that there aren’t enough – but rather that there are so many good things about them!
However, after much deliberation and some input from the staff here at Head Office, we managed to get a list together. So, in no particular order – here are the 5 best things about LED strip lights.
Flexibility
Being flexible, LED strip lights can be applied on uneven surfaces and taken round corner. This is where their other name – LED tape – comes from, as it is just as flexible as a piece of tape.
They’re so flexible in fact, that they will still shine at 100% brightness even when it is bent back on itself – with no damage done to the strip or lights themselves.
So you have the freedom to use it round walls, on the back of your TV, or anywhere else that might have otherwise been awkward to put lights on.
Colour Changing
Our LED strip lights aren’t just limited to a single colour – this is a massive advantage of using LEDs generally, as they can emit different colours without the need for any kind of filter.
Take our RGB colour changing LED strip lights for example – they give you the choice of up to 16 different colours, including white.
Going even further is our LED pixel tape, which can output literally thousands of colours. It’s so impressive, that Samsung used our very own pixel tape at the launch of their Galaxy Tablet and Gear products in London back in 2013. Check out the video below!
Cut To Length
All LED strip lights can be cut at designated points along the tape, allowing you to have the exact amount you need to run along your shelf, kitchen cabinet or ceiling trough.
The intervals at which our tape can be cut are as follows:
- Tape with 30 LEDs per metre can be cut every 10cm,
- Tape with 60 LEDs per metre can be cut every 5cm, or
- Tape with 120 LEDs per metre can be cut every 2.5cm.
This doesn’t apply to all our strip lights though – our RGBW tape has 60 LEDs per metre but can only be cut every 10cm because of the arrangement of the LEDs themselves. Don’t forget that these cutting lengths are doubled for 24V tape too.
It’s definitely worth knowing that we offer a free cutting and soldering service on up to 5 cuts, saving you the hassle of having to do it yourself!
Waterproof
As if LED strip lights weren’t flexible enough – both literally and figuratively – using them outside is also an option because of the range of IP ratings we offer, protecting them from dust and water.
IP ratings can be confusing to understand if you don’t know what the numbers and letters mean. IP stands for Ingress Protection, and is usually followed by 2 numbers. These digits indicate how well something protects against foreign objects and moisture respectively.
The table below outlines some of the main IP ratings that you can have on your LED strip lights.
IP Rating | Protection against foreign bodies | Protection against moisture |
IP20 | Protected against objects larger than 50mm | No protection |
IP44 | Protected against objects larger than 1mm | Splash proof |
IP65 | Completely dust tight | Light jets of water |
IP67 | Completely dust tight | Submergible at depths up to 1m for up to 30 minutes |
IP68 | Completely dust tight | Fully submergible |
We can also put IP68 nano protection too. This differs from other kinds of protection as it doesn’t make your strips any bigger physically – instead using silicon coating to provide the cover.
What this means is that you can still use any of our aluminium profiles to house your LED tape, which can help extend the lifespan of your strip lights by up to 50%.
Self Adhesive
All our LED strip lights come with commercial grade 3M adhesive on the back, allowing you to stick them down to pretty much any surface – no need for any brackets or screws!
The adhesive is really strong, though before sticking anything down we can’t guarantee that it will stick to absolutely every surface, so please ensure the place where you want to stick them down is clean of any dust or grease prior to application.
Of course, this list is by no means comprehensive – as we were forced to omit many other features such as the long lifespan, energy efficiency and safety aspects. Despite this, I think you’ll agree with us that LED strip lights are pretty awesome.
